Construction and renovations at the Cannon Air Force Base, fitness center are under way to provide necessary improvements to the facility.

Upgrades to the fitness center will create a larger cardio space, fitness and weight rooms, as well as create a more efficient layout of workout equipment. The weight room will gain an additional 550 square feet and partitions in the cardio room will be removed to maximize usable space. The family fitness area will be relocated and expanded and will include a larger children’s play area. Necessary repairs to the heating and cooling system for the entire facility will also be completed.

The locker rooms will undergo a facelift to include new carpet, paint and plumbing fixtures. Partitions in restrooms and men’s showers will be installed, as well as new countertops. A new administrative space for fitness center staff will expand into the lobby area, allowing for more equipment storage space.

“We will soon start preparing the site for the new additions,” said Shelly Schmidt, project manager for the fitness center renovations. “The mechanical piping is all in place and we are waiting on the new HVAC system to arrive. We will also temporarily relocate the cardio room to the gymnasium in the coming weeks.”

The construction of an outdoor physical training area will complement the upgrades to the fitness center. This sheltered pavilion will be located directly behind the gym and will provide space for functional movement training and strength and conditioning programs.

“We had our first concrete placement on the physical training area at the end of January, and are preparing for our second,” said project manager Shawn Connors. “Our structural steel has arrived and we are currently working on trenching for utilities. We are on track to have it completed by April.”

Closures and disruptions in and around the fitness center can be expected until the project’s completion. Updates will be made available on the 27th Special Operations Wing’s Facebook page. Fitness center customers are asked to be patient while we make these necessary upgrades that will benefit the entire base population.

The fitness center renovations are expected to be completed by April 2012.
